Lens Review Appointment: Dec eighteen, 2020 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $10.00 | Rating:viii

Pros: Lite
Cons: Cheaply made
Sharpness: 8 Aberrations: 8 Bokeh: five Handling: 8 Value: 8 Photographic camera Used: One thousand-30

Ok for a cheap zoom. I institute mine in good shape with thoughts of using it on my 1000-thousand if always I wanted a telephoto for information technology. The autofocus is loud (spiral bulldoze) merely works as well as whatever of my DA lenses. For $15 Canadian I couldnt pass it up, simply it isnt a lens I would take sought out if I hadnt happened upon it in proficient condition.

Lens Review Date: February 24, 2019 I tin can recommend this lens: Yeah | Price: $thirty.00 | Rating:x

Pros: Incredible resolution at 135mm
Cons:
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: 10 Value: 10 Camera Used: K7, MZ5N

This is an incredible performer. I've been using some software chosen MTF Mapper to profile all my lenses (and then many lenses, all Vivitar S1's, Kirons, Tamron SP's etc.) Given that the sensor on the K7 is capable of resolving 75lpmm, you need a lens that can do the aforementioned....this lens can at 135mm f8. There are not whatsoever other lenses which come close. The lens is not every bit slap-up at the brusque or long end, but at 135mm, wowsers, this lens is amazing.

Tamron 278D at 135mm f8, MTF25 resolution

Tamron 278D at 135mm f8, contrast at 20, 40, 80lpmm

Lens Review Engagement: October 23, 2018 I can recommend this lens: Aye | Price: $24.69 | Rating:vii

Pros: Lightweight
Cons: Not especially sharp, feels slightly flimsy but OK
Sharpness: vii Aberrations: viii Bokeh: 6 Handling: 8 Value: 8 Camera Used: Canon Eos 400D

I bought this badged equally a "Kodak Gear 78-215" for Canon - it's the same lens, there seems to exist some fence over the true focal length. My guess is that Tamron have been slightly conservative with their labelling, the Kodak Gear version is labelled accurately. Since it'southward near a ii.v% variation at either end it actually doesn't make much difference. The extremes are identified as 80mm and 210mm in metadata.

I took it out for a test walk in Kensington Gardens, London, on a nice vivid day. Information technology's lightweight and handles well, and seemed to work well throughout the range but didn't strike me as being any better than other zooms I've tested in this range, and a couple of pictures came out less abrupt than I expected.

Some examples:

More than here:

Overall, I think that information technology performs well-nigh likewise as tin can exist expected - but there are better and faster lenses out at that place that aren't a lot more than expensive second hand. The big reward is calorie-free weight for the size, making information technology a good lens to take with yous if you don't particularly expect to need information technology but want to comprehend all possibilities.

Lens Review Date: January 3, 2018 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Toll: $45.00 | Rating:viii

Pros: Toll, adequately abrupt throughout most the focal range, snappy AF
Cons: Some CA (fixable in post), a bit soft at extreme focal distances
Sharpness: 9 Aberrations: 7 Bokeh: 8 Treatment: 10 Value: 10 Camera Used: Thousand-1, G-xxx, K-fifty

This lens is a great Ebay find if y'all can spot a K-mount version. I take the Promaster branded version. Because it's an earlier autofocus motion-picture show-era lens, it has an aperture ring. Basically you can employ it on an old manual body like a K1000, or switch it to "A" and permit an electronic photographic camera body command it. Because it'south FF, it'south a good choice for a cheap and functional lens on the G-1. Hither's a shot of a drone I snapped with the Pentax Thousand-one, 1/100 @ f/20 and I think 200mm. I should mention that drones don't hover in ane spot... they float around a bit in wind and with GPS corrections. Mounted to the K-1 I was able to lock focus and hold and follow, and get some crisp shots.

The downside: Information technology does endure from a little CA / purple brume on occasion, but zip you couldn't eliminate in mail service, and it isn't all the time. Also, it'southward a little soft sometimes at 80, but y'all aren't ownership one of these to shoot at 80mm.

I've used this lens now for well-nigh five years (and a twelvemonth on the K-1) and one time I learned its few limitations, it'due south proven to be a capable lens. It isn't the greatest but for the price information technology definitely holds its own. I've seen a few negative reviews near information technology and honestly the only thing I tin can remember is that historic period and surround take taken their toll on some of these. Given you discover i lightly used (like I did), you volition exist happy.

It'southward by no means recommended for professional apply but in a pinch it could clasp out some pro-level shots, and it definitely does fine in virtually situations. I mean I simply paid $45 USD. I recall I got a bargain!

Lens Review Date: May 1, 2017 I can recommend this lens: No | Price: $thirty.00 | Rating:5

Pros: lightweight, silent and somewhat-fast focus
Cons: IQ, colour abnormality
Sharpness: 6 Aberrations: 5 Bokeh: 5 Handling: 8 Value: 7 Camera Used: Pentax K-l

I take put this lens against a more than recent Tamron 70-300, and the older 80-210 cannot match the modern opponent. The sharpness of my re-create of the 80-210 is not acceptable, according to my taste.

Y'all see a number of full-res cops here, forth with my considerations:

Lens Review Date: August 4, 2016 I can recommend this lens: Yep | Price: $35.00 | Rating:9

Pros: really sharp lens
Cons: few CA's
Sharpness: 9 Aberrations: nine Bokeh: viii Handling: 9 Value: viii

maybe there are some troubles of production or an improvement of newer lenses?

My tokina 2,6-2,8/28-70 or Meyer Domiplan 2,8 was my worst lens because of potent CA'southward - but this one is a normal lens, well corrected, non without CA'southward, merely acceptable.

flare stopped down a few not remarcable, nice colours, proficient contrast

this is not my best lens, but for me a actually fine performer

averidge viii,half-dozen points = 9 points

Lens Review Date: May xv, 2015 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $30.00 | Rating:six

Pros: Inexpensive, light, smooth zoom, fast AF
Cons: Not the sharpest, imperial fringing, rotating and extending focus band
Sharpness: 6 Aberrations: vii Bokeh: seven Handling: 8 Value: half dozen Camera Used: K3

I picked up this lens for 25 and decided to take a take a chance.

Information technology's boilerplate size for the focal lengths covered, merely very light. The build quality isn't the best but I've seen a lot worse and the focusing and zoom are very smooth indeed. The discontinuity ring also clicks nicely. AF is fast but not exceptionally so.

This lens doesn't produce the sharpest results at any discontinuity. There's virtually no change in this aspect stopping downward to smaller apertures or at dissimilar focal lengths. It'south non really precipitous plenty to be adequate broad open and stays that way. Purple fringing is the same - it's ever present to some degree at every discontinuity setting and focal length.

The focusing ring, in fact the whole extending zoom barrel, not just turns when focusing but as you focus closer the focusing band moves away from the camera, which is annoying and makes transmission focusing tricky.

Image quality isn't nifty only it's non terrible either. The light weight and nice experience of the lens make me like information technology overall. I plan to by and large employ it on movie where I doubt either the resolution or fringing volition exist noticeable at all.

Pros: Speedy AF, Lightweight, Sharp even wide open in whole range
Cons: CA
Sharpness: 9 Aberrations: iii Bokeh: 8 Handling: nine Value: 10

I've got this lens with metal mountain not plastic as seen in film and I was surprised .

Ane negative thing this lens is PF, CA, PF and CA, information technology's so terrible but i can't complaint with the price.

This lens much better and better than Tamron Di 70-300 especially for speedy AF and sharpness. Both of them have CA problem.

Lens Review Date: November five, 2012 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $30.00 | Rating:8

Pros: Blazing AF!, sharp stopped down, polish zoom
Cons: Regal fringing, CA
Sharpness: eight Aberrations: 7 Bokeh: 7 Handling: 9 Value: 10

No reason non to like it. It can be acquired on the cheap and the AF speed is truly something to behold. The DA 55-300 is positively snail-like comparing speed. It's non perfect. Wide open, the CA is adequately obvious only not that bad. Stopped down to f9 is it'south sweet spot. It's actually rather sharp at f9. At that place is still some PF even at f9 but information technology's simply on really brilliant highlights and that tin can be cleaned up in RAW. You can meet that as well as the somewhat cool colour in the shot below. The zoom mechanism is very polish to the point that zoom pitter-patter is an consequence but that besides means that smooth continuous zooming while shooting is easy. Information technology is too VERY light meaning it'due south a great all-day shooter. Handles flare fairly well and mostly contrast is pretty skillful even without the hood. Bokeh is nothing fabulous and has distinct rings around OOF highlights. Then again, this is not a super smooth portrait lens. It's best use would be sports considering the AF speed.

I recently shot much of an airshow with it. The AF is then fast I got shots many lenses would miss.

I should annotation I have the Promaster version which differs merely in the grip fashion. You lot can detect it even cheaper than the identical Tamron.

Russian Mig - Just nether Mach i. (no adjustments, no cropping). Yup, that'southward information technology's shadow on the ground just in forepart of it.

Lens Review Date: October 31, 2011 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $70.00 | Rating:vi

Pros: Lightweight, modest, cheap, fast AF, practiced value
Cons: CA, seems to struggle with high resolution, occasional metering bug, poor contrast
Sharpness: 7 Aberrations: 3 Bokeh: 7 Handling: viii Value: 8

First of all this is a keen budget lens just it does suffer in a few areas because of this.

The pros: very light, and small and is a great lens to have in your pocketbook if y'all're out and about. When it's on my K-Ten the whole package is very light indeed and then pretty easy to keep steady. The AF is lightening fast too, certainly when compared to the Pentax 55-300 DAL. It's abrupt-ish but aught infrequent.

The con: It has terrible CA in just about any situation where there's any sort of contrast in the light, but if you're shooting in RAW then information technology's easily fixed afterward. Information technology does likewise seem to struggle with resolution at the longer focal lengths which is a bit of a problem. The biggest badgerer for me though (and this may just be my re-create) is that when y'all shoot at anything over f8-ish the metering is woeful unless you choose spot metering. Otherwise, everything is hopelessly over exposed and diddled out past the point of recovery.

All in all though this lens is a great budget buy and I have no regrets at the moment. Plainly, in an ideal world there are telephoto lenses I'd rather accept in my bag but until I can spare a k I see no point in upgrading. A few sample shots below. They've been sharpened a little and had some contrast boosts:

Lens Review Date: March 26, 2010 I tin can recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $xx.00 | Rating:eight

Pros: Lite weight, really fast focusing, precipitous even wide open
Cons: CA in confronting the low-cal shots

I acquired my example of this lens in an eBay package costing $40 with an SFX and a Pentax f 35-70. Both the SFX and the 35-lxx are essentially junk, only this lens turned out to be a treasure, despite likewise being damaged.

Although I take had information technology for more than 6 months I take only merely started to apply information technology. There is internal dust, everything wobbles and there is quite a nasty scratch on the front element, but it rises above these challenges

The speed at which it finds focus is astounding for a non HSM lens. Information technology is lightning fast. Although it is best stopped downwards a little it actually performs very well indeed at all focal lengths even when wide open.

I am in 2 minds virtually whether to try to find a cosmetically meliorate case, only and then I have one that works really well despite the war wounds.

At this toll how could you lose even if it were a mediocre performer? Simply it isn't mediocre, it'southward quite astounding.

I'll post some example shots later - got a busy weekend ahead.
